Alison Miller is a fine art photographer based in Virginia Beach and just recently received her BFA in Photography. Originally from Mississippi, where she built over a decade of experience specializing in portrait photography, she moved with her family to Virginia in 2014 when her husband became stationed at a local navy base. Shortly after arrival, she began her academic journey in the arts. She has since gained a passion for other genres of photography and explores her capabilities to incorporate other aspects of art, including painting and art history, into her images.
Her current work focuses on two separate concepts. The first is the exploration of identity, the maternal role, and various states of mental health in which she captures through still life, documentary, and self-portraiture. The second is the symbolism and significance of food in the American culture. In imitation of Renaissance and Dutch paintings, she depicts American “staple foods,” understanding that depicted food is symbolic of the country from which it originated. She plans to continue research into the history, health, technology, and other aspects correlated to American cuisine.
